Week 11 - Figure Drawing Facial Anatomy

Figure Drawing concentrating on the Facial Anatomy, One

This is a 15-minute drawing of the facial anatomy. From this perspective the model was viewed upon a ¾ angle. This makes the drawing slightly more difficult to draw because the proportions are completely different more one side of her face to the other.

There has been some good, accurate measuring within this drawing and you can tell that it is Leslie the model. There is great detail around the lip area where shading has been used rather than hard lines to create the lips as well as the Philtrum and also the Nasolabial Furrow. This subtle detail defines the pictures and makes it stand out. Without this detail the drawing would look odd and would not be advanced drawing.

Figure Drawing concentrating on the Facial Anatomy, Two

This is a 25-minute drawing using a black conte crayon and white soft pastel on a purple sugar papered background. This has been an artificial light used in this image to make one side of Leslie’s face a lot bright than the other. Giving the opportunity for great contrast of tones to be used.

Using this pink sugar paper has really made the detail stand out within Leslie’s face including the detail around Leslie’s lips and neck where the slight hint of wrinkles can be seen that were present on Leslie’s face. This detail gives the impression of Leslie by drawing what is seen and not trying to over up these details. The right side of Leslie’s face shows a great value of light, which is cast upon her face leaving the opposite side of her face in darkness. This great contrast of light and dark leads the viewer’s eye continuously around the drawing as the colour blends in from one to another.

To improve upon this drawing more accurate measuring could have been done, as the left eye appears to be to close to Leslie’s nose and also set to far down. This makes the proportions of Leslie’s face look a little odd but with improving upon this would make this drawing really stand out.

Figure Drawing concentrating on the Facial Anatomy, Three

This is a 20-minute drawing of the facial anatomy concentrating a great detail more on the shading, which has been created from the artificial light, which is casting shadows upon Leslie’s face. This drawing shows one half of Leslie’s face is darkness and the other in total brightness creating an opportunity to create great shading within this drawing.

There has been great detail used with the shading around the lip area where lines have been used and shaded to get this feeling of a very straight, inexpressive mouth, as the model appears to be sad. There has been no line drawn whatsoever for the bottom lip but only shading around the lip to represent where the lip would appear. This works really well with the picture because although you can’t see the lip you can imagine it is there.

There could have been a lot of improvements with the drawing as some of the measuring is quite far out from what it should have been. Leslie’s eyes appear to be too close together making her look slightly bogeyed. Leslie’s nose also appears to be too small making the area around the top of her nose and the centre corners of her eyes look as though it has been pinched and appears to be sunk in. Although it is a good depiction of Leslie these improvements could have really made this image stand out a lot more.
